Lancaster Archery Foundation Helps New York Group Launch Indoor Program

An archery program in New York has received assistance from Lancaster Archery Foundation in its efforts to make archery available to its program participants all year long.

SRYMCA Longshots of Sarasota Springs, N.Y., received $1,000 from the foundation to help outfit an indoor shooting range.

The SRYMCA offers a summer camp that includes archery as one of the activities. The organization has access to an indoor facility capable of accommodating a 20-yard shooting range, but it needs backstop curtains and other equipment to establish the range.

With that indoor range, SRYMCA plans to offer archery year-round to its program participants.

“The facility will accommodate a 20-yard indoor range that will allow us to keep archery programs running year-round through upstate New York winter months,” said Chris Henderson of SRYMCA Longshots.

“Currently winter makes it impossible for us to work with and retain archers year round. Our hope is that well-advertised, highly visible competitions will generate interest and increase recruitment.”

Having run indoor leagues and tournaments during the winter months for decades, Rob Kaufhold, president of Lancaster Archery Foundation, knows well how such programs can attract new people to the sport and retain existing archers.

“Creating a solid indoor archery program will go a long way toward building a growing archery community in and around Sarasota Springs,” he said.

“We hope to see some new archers come out of this region to compete in the biggest indoor tournaments in the world.”

Based in Lancaster, Pa., the Lancaster Archery Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expand, develop and promote 3D and target archery to help people improve their confidence, discipline and leadership skills through participation in competitive archery.
